ways of addressing them.Representative scenarios: Andrea, a middle manager at Technoble Industries, discovers that she has just been passed over for a major promotion despite having been greatly praised for the high productivity and strong morale of her workgroup. When Andrea stops in to discuss this with Michael, her supervisor, she is stunned to find that he himself blocked her promotion. “Your managerial style and tactics are too soft for you to be an effective upper manager,” Michael tells Andrea. The management at Servicon has announced a new set of procedures designed to “streamline” their customer service process. They’ve sent out a memo to all their frontline employees outlining these procedures; in response, the employees are reacting with anger, frustration, and resistance. “If those guys just came and worked our jobs for half a day, they’d realize how hard our work is, and how impossible it would be to do what they’re telling us,” the employees complain. A long-standing, smooth functioning workgroup places a strong emphasis on enjoying the job. Members tease each other, play lots of practical jokes, and have become good friends in and out of the workplace. Now their supervisor has hired a new team member who is quiet, private, and prioritizes work over relationships.
